None of them is worthy of becoming President

-

I, FOR one, will not be voting in the presidential election. Like many others I feel that none of the participants are worthy of the honour.

There are very many good people out there who would do a far better job and represent the country with dignity. Just to mention two, Fergus Finlay, who has done trojan work for Barnardos and Deirdre Clune MEP, a very highly regarded representative.

There are many more people out there who are more suited for the position. God help us if we cannot appoint better.

S. O’Rourke,

Red-herring smiles

A GROUP photo doing the rounds of Ministers Heather Humphreys, Leo Varadkar, and Eoghan Murphy, when they announced their ‘grand plan’ to ease the housing scandal in the distant future, is a prime example of wriggling off the current hook with related bluster and inaction on the housing crisis.

The silly, permanent smiles of those who try to convey that we never had it so good yet we will make it even better, fools nobody.

There has hardly been enough social housing built in the past 10 years that would satisfy an Irish village, and nonsense talk of the Land Development Agency is yet another long-fingered promise which will do nothing to help the people who are in immediate danger of having family life ruined because of a decade of absent housing policy.

We are in an era of red-herring governance taking priority over the real and desperate needs of the population.

There was a time when trust and hope in our rulers held out some chance. Those days are now gone.

Sell to the overseas vulture funds and make families homeless with government approval is the real face of ‘liberal’ Ireland.

Robert Sullivan,

Take the money!

BUDGET 2019 is only a few weeks away, so why is it there seems to be a total lack of interest even apathy by the finance department to get the back taxes owed by the Apple Corporation.

Surely to boost its coffers any ambitious, resourceful government would try what it could to increase its spending power, so why hasn’t this happened? Over to you Paschal?

Lambert loss

POOR Judge is dead, his wise words are silenced with the passing of the Lambert Puppet Theatre. Eugene Lambert was a treasure, he trundled his way into our living rooms and into our hearts in his wonderful Wanderly Wagon.

O’Brien, Grandmother and their friends, including Sneaky Snake, gave our ‘small people’ a sense of moral and ethical values without preaching.

We are indebted to the Lambert family and to their talented puppeteers for the hours of innocent and wholesome entertainment they shared with our children of yesteryear.

Thank you! Margaret O’Shea, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick.

Roy’s raging

THE performance of the Ireland soccer team is very important to very many people.

The team are an extension of us. It doesn’t matter if the players are second or third-generation Irish, they have chosen to play with us.

We are happy that a Glaswegian-accented legend put the ball in the English net; we are delighted that a cockney with an Italian surname caused havoc to international defences. We respect our players and our players respect the fans.

Our players should not be subjected to the demented rants of a pseudo-perfectionist with emotional intelligence issues.

Roy Keane was a good player. That’s what he was, a good player!

It is evident, however, from the endless incidents that are attributed to him that he lacks the people skills to manage or be an assistant manager. He has the persona of a hard man.

What does a hard man do? Bully? Intimidate? Manage by fear? It just doesn’t work.

Our players don’t need to play for us, they want to play for us. They should not be subjected to the wild rants of a man who seems deluded enough to think his own uncompromising approach is best.

Soon John Delaney will realise that Martin O’Neill and Keane are impacting seat sales. Delaney needs seat sales.

He will then approach a man manager who can over-deliver with limited resources and Mick McCarthy will be restored to his rightful place. We shall have success again. Managing by fear has had its day, let’s start managing with respect.
