‘TD used Leo visit to pro­mote his own agenda’

A SUR­VIVOR of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home be­lieves in­de­pen­dent TD Seán Can­ney had his own agenda in play dur­ing the Taoiseach’s visit to the burial site.

PJ Haverty said Mr Can­ney was ‘feath­er­ing his own nest’ by us­ing Leo Varad­kar’s re­quest to visit the Tuam baby grave as a chance to se­cure fund­ing for lo­cal projects.

On the Tues­day fol­low­ing the visit, Mr Can­ney is­sued a press re­lease re­veal­ing that the Taoiseach had con­firmed to him that fund­ing was avail­able in the HSE bud­get to re­fur­bish the Old Grove Hospi­tal build­ing, lo­cated min­utes from the grave site.

Mr Haverty be­lieves that Mr Can­ney raised the mat­ter of the Old Grove Hospi­tal as he sees it as a pri­or­ity over the fu­ture of the Tuam grave.

The Ir­ish Mail on Sun­day re­quested a com­ment from Mr Can­ney, but none has been re­ceived.
