FF: Sean’s one of ours
SÉan GallaGHer is poised to become the beneficiary of a pro-life style revolt by Fianna Fáil over the party’s ‘choice’ of michael D Higgins for the presidential race.
In a scenario mirroring the party split over abortion, a growing number of tDs are snubbing the decision to give president Higgins a second term in the arás.
a senior Fianna Fáil tD warned: ‘this is only the tip of the iceberg. michael D is a lovely fellow but at the end of the day there is not a vote in it for us with a michael D victory. Gallagher is one of ours, whether he likes it or not, too. He has the pedigree, working for rory O’Hanlon. He’s not exactly the stealth candidate, more of a de facto Fianna Fáil runner.’
they added: ‘If micheál doesn’t like it, he will have to lump it.’
Fianna Fáil’s John mcGuinness said that when it comes to supporting michael D ‘the troops will ignore the orders of the generals’. citing growing concern within the party that Sinn Féin will get a clear run in the absence of a Fianna Fáil candidate , mr mcGuinness added: ‘the troops are fully loaded and ready to fly the Gallagher flag.’
