How many pictures about the Krays do we need? One more than you imagine, because while the latest, Dead

Man Walking (18) ★★★★, is very unpleasant, it’s also very good. Working to a tight budget, writer/director Richard John Taylor opts to dramatise just one episode from the Kray’s saga – the springing from Dartmoor prison of Frank ‘Mad Axeman’ Mitchell. As Frank, Josh Myers (right) looks suitably Neanderthal. Walking only semi-erect, he instils fear with just a twitch of his jaw. As our ‘heroes’, Marc Pickering and Nathanjohn Carter are feral yet charming, and there’s a swansong cameo from Leslie ‘Dirty Den’ Grantham as Nipper of the Yard. Although Michael R Roskam’s

Racer And The Jailbird (15A) ★★★★ is about a gang of heist merchants, the picture is more a romance. The lovers are Bibi (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a racing driver, and Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts), a car importer. Or so he says... While the heists have all the clatter and precision you’d wish for, it’s the love scenes that pack a punch. Can it really be the golden anniversary of childhood favourite Joe 90? As ITV’s remastered collector’s edition box set Joe 90: The Complete Series (G) ★★★★★ proves, it can be and is. Christopher Bray
