manager Mark Hughes resisted any temptation to question why Xherdan Shaqiri found more energy for Jurgen Klopp than for Stoke City after the Swiss player created two of Liverpool’s goals on his first start for the club.

Gary Neville launched a scathing TV attack on Shaqiri this summer for his ‘unprofessional approach’ to the relegation battle at Stoke. Hughes said of the 26-year-old: ‘I’m pleased for Shaq. He’s got a fantastic move. He’s always seen himself as a player at a topsix club. He’s a good guy, too.’
