High praise for children’s TV Brexit explainer
AN RTÉ children’s TV segment explaining Brexit has become one of the most-watched news items of the year on the station’s website.
The Brexit ‘explainer’ by correspondent Paul Cunningham has so far had more than 600,000 views and has been retweeted by the physicist and TV presenter, Brian Cox and BBC Newsnight’s Gavin Esler. The three-minute piece explaining the pros and cons of the Irish backstop, Chequers and a Canada-style trade deal, has also been played on the UK’s LBC Radio’s peak morning show. Introducing the item on his show, presenter James O’Brien said ‘the children’s TV clip gives a more accurate and informative description of Brexit than any Brexiteer’.
Brian Cox tweeted about it, saying: ‘If you don’t understand why the Brexit negotiations are difficult (I get quite a few correspondents on twitter saying ‘Why can’t we just leave? ... WTO ... or something) then this piece from a children’s TV show in Ireland is very clear – even IDS might understand it!’
Commenting on the clip, Paul Cunningham said: ‘We didn’t take sides or blame anyone.’
