ON a hot American farm near Atlanta, Georgia, I spotted BMW’s new plug-in hybrid version of its X5 SUV. It’s powered by a 3-litre petrol engine, linked to an 82kW electric motor. The X5 xDrive45e iPerformance, has a range of 80km at speeds of up to 140kph in electric power only (234kph max hybrid speed).
