‘I started writing books after I failed to find work’

- By Jim Gallagher

TV STAR Amy Huberman has revealed that her writing career began out of isolation while living in London,

The actress, whose new comedy series Finding Joy has proved a hit for RTÉ, said she wrote her first novel, Hello, Heartbreak, in 2009 when she couldn’t find work.

‘Weirdly, as much as I enjoy the books, it was such a random thing,’ she said.

‘I wrote the first book because I was living in London and was on my own and was out of work. So in between jobs and working in shops, I used to write.

‘You want to be creative but I was not getting any jobs. I was like, what am I going to do with my time? So I wrote the first book not knowing what was going to happen.’

The star, who created, wrote and stars in the six-part Finding Joy, said she loved having creative control over the new series but was keenly aware of the responsibility of her new role. ‘My brain nearly melted on day one,’ said Amy who plays newly single Joy. ‘I was looking at the crew – and 100 to 150 people can be involved.’

And she admitted to harbouring nerves ahead of the show’s debut last week. ‘When it all comes from your own brain, it does feel quite exposed. It’s scary.’

The first episode of Finding Joy attracted 378,000 viewers.
