Be in no doubt, the best movie out this week – quite possibly all year – is fully 72 years old. Yes, A Matter Of Life And Death with David Niven (right) (U) ★★★★★ finally gets the 4K Blu-ray treatment it deserves. Nobody, not even its first post-war audiences, ever saw the picture looking quite this good. It’s a Technicolor (and monochrome) dream. Back in clunkerland, don’t go anywhere near Shock And Awe (15) ★★. A dramatisation of the run-up to Dubya’s invasion of Iraq, it’s clumsily directed by Rob When Harry Met Sally Reiner. What next, Michael Moore does slapstick?

A nasty thriller with David Tennant (right) miscast as a serial killer, Bad Samaritan (15) ★ lives up to its title. Anyone used to the tight plots and tighter repartee of Oscar Wilde is in for a shock with The Happy Prince (15) ★★★. Writer/director/star Rupert Everett’s biopic is laugh-free and all over the place. Nothing to go Wilde about.
