O’NEILL MAKES A POINT
Manager hails stalemate as platform for Ireland rebuilding project
A DEFIANT Martin O’Neill defended his team’s performance after a drab 0-0 draw with Denmark in Dublin last night sabotaged Ireland’s prospects of promotion to the top-tier of the Nations League.
O’Neill pointed to the clean sheet as ‘a statement’ of ‘rebuilding’ after conceding nine goals in the two previous competitive games.
One point out of six has left Ireland struggling to avoid relegation to League C with two games to come, including a trip to Denmark.
‘We started well but then allowed Denmark to dictate. We needed to create more. The clean sheet was a start. Overall, Denmark didn’t cause us many problems.
‘The players will be ready for Wales on Tuesday,’ said O’Neill.
