Our writers nominated for top awards
THE Irish Mail on Sunday and the Irish Daily Mail have received 16 nominations in this year’s NewsBrands Ireland annual Journalism Awards.
The MoS’s Crime Correspondent Debbie McCann and MoS reporter Claire Scott were both nominated in the Features (Popular) category.
Showbusiness Editor Niamh Walsh is up for the Showbusiness Journalist of the Year accolade.
Investigative reporter Michael O’Farrell has been shortlisted in the Investigative Journalism category for his exposé on the St John of God coverup of 20 child abuse allegations against a Christian Brother. He’s also been nominated for Scoop of the Year for the same story.
Nicola Byrne and Niamh Walsh also secured a nomination for Business Story of the Year for their story on a blogger selling products at inflated prices. And MoS’s Mark Gallagher and Shane McGrath are both in the running in the Sports Writer of the Year category.
Meanwhile, The Irish Daily Mail’s campaign to ‘Protect Our Kids Online’ has been nominated for the inaugural Campaigning Journalism prize.
The Irish Daily Mail’s Chief Correspondent Catherine Fegan has received two nominations including Crime Story and Foreign Coverage of the Year.
Political Editor Senan Molony is nominated in the Scoop of the Year category. Writer Jenny Friel is nominated in the Features (Popular) category, and again in the News Analysis category. Philip Nolan is shortlisted in the Columnist (Popular) category.
This year’s awards are sponsored by the National Lottery for the third year, whose chief executive Dermot Griffin said: ‘An independent, inquiring media is vital to any democracy and it is heartening to see such a high standard of entries evident in the Awards shortlist published today.’
All shortlisted nominees will attend the 2018 NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards ceremony on November 15.
