How our story helped State recoup €130k

- By John Lee

LANDS were leased from the Office of Public Works to form part of the Templemore Golf Club attached to the Garda Training College, the Irish Mail on Sunday revealed last year.

Among an avalanche of disclosures about financial mismanagement at the Garda training college, one was that there was more than €100,000 in back-rent owed for lands leased to the golf club.

Local TDs had written to then-justice minister Frances Fitzgerald expressing fears that the lands might be taken off the golf club.

The audit of OPW accounts carried out by the Comptroller and Auditor General shows that some money has finally been recouped. The report shows the OPW recovered €131,261 rent for lands let to An Garda Síochána at Templemore, Tipperary. The rent was due for the years 2009-2013.
