MOTOGP: Italian Andrea Dovizioso piled the pressure on championship leader Marc Marquez by qualifying in pole position for today’s Japanese Grand Prix while the Spaniard will start in sixth. Marquez can claim a fifth MotoGP title with a win at Motegi but Dovizioso, his closest rival in the championship race, set the fastest qualifying time of 1:44.590 seconds.

TENNIS: Kyle Edmund will play his second ATP Tour final after beating Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-4 at the European Open in Antwerp. Edmund served 16 aces on his way to victory and now faces another Frenchman in the crowd-pleasing Gael Monfils, who defeated Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4.

Edmund later tweeted: ‘Into the @EuroTennisOpen final! Focused.’

TENNIS: Kiki Bertens plans to make the most of her late summons to the WTA Finals in Singapore after slipping into the eight-woman field when world No 1 Simona Halep pulled out with a back injury.

Bertens has won three titles and reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals this year. She is drawn in the Red Group with Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens.
