Gaelic games’ brave WW1 heroes
John Cunningham
(Tipperary) CORPORAL Cunningham served in the Leinster Regiment and died fighting in France. He was posthumously honoured with a Victoria Cross which his mother accepted from King George V at Buckingham Palace. Barney Hennessy
(Carlow) A NATIVE of Graiguecullen he captained both Carlow and Laois in his football career. He fought in France with the Connaught Rangers. Thomas Bradley (Monaghan) PLAYED in goal in the 1930 All-Ireland final as Monaghan lost to Kerry. Fought at both Passchendaele and the Somme in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. Frank ‘Scout’ Butler
(Tipperary) BUTLER fought at Flanders in the First World War. A few years later, he played in goal for Tipperary against Dublin in Croke Park, on the day that would become known as Bloody Sunday. Jimmy Clyne
(Leitrim) PLAYED with two of his brothers on the first Ballinamore team to win the Leitrim SFC. Died in France, only months after enlisting, in the service of the Irish Guards, in October 1915.
