Tragic end of little Michael... at just 21

-

‘Close your mouth please, michael, we are not a codfish,’ said Julie Andrews as Poppins to an astonished michael Banks in the original. matthew Garber, right, was just eight when he was picked from hundreds of boys who auditioned for the part. He did not move on from child to adult star, and caught hepatitis during a trip along the ‘hippy trail’ in India. His family denied reports that it was caused by drug use. He died in June 1977, aged 21. In the new film michael is an adult, played by Ben Whishaw, and Poppins looks after his children including Georgie, left on the bicycle, played by Joel Dawson.
