Kellie’s gold means she’s a world champ
BOXER Kellie Harrington has won gold for Ireland at the World Women’s Elite Championships in New Delhi.
The Dublin lightweight defeated Thai southpaw Sudaporn Seesondee in the Indian capital yesterday afternoon.
Kellie now joins Michael Conlan and five-time winner Katie Taylor as Ireland’s only senior amateur world champions ever. The young Dubliner took the title exactly four years to the day since Katie won her fifth gold medal at the championships.
Kellie had already posted four wins over New Zealander Troy Garton, home favourite Sarita Devi, Canadian Caroline Veyre, and Kazakh starlet Karina Ibragimova, before claiming her fifth victory following a tight decision.
She was enthusiastically supported by her team-mates, and team manager Bernard Dunne.
