Two things I love: musicals and Abba’s greatest hits. Two things I loathe: Mamma

Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (PG) ★★. Sorry, but what’s the point of taking some of the best pop ever and turning it into pap that wouldn’t pass muster on Eurovision? The story is just a rerun of MM! In the first movie, we learned how Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), on the eve of her wedding to Sky (Dominic Cooper), was desperate for her mum, Donna (Meryl Streep, inset), to tell her which of three men — Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), Harry (Colin Firth) or Sam (Pierce Brosnan) — was her dad. In the second film, we flash back to the Seventies to see the three lotharios in action. Frankly, how anyone would fall for any one of the three dweebs is beyond me. MM!2’s big problem, though, is that MM! milked Abba’s back catalogue dry. The classics are dusted off again here, but it means that the sequel is almost a remake. Songs are again to the fore in Eugene Jarecki’s The King (15) ★ ★★ ★, a nicely crafted documentary on Elvis Presley. As well as great footage of Elvis in action, there’s seriously informed commentary from Greil Marcus, while the Presley back story is narrated by Ethan Hawke.
