Sugrue rages at ‘ridiculous’ punishment
IN AN open letter last week, Laois manager John Sugrue pointed out the farcical element to Laois being punished for breaking training camp rules with the loss of home advantage for one of their Division Three League games next year, while other counties escape sanction.
‘It’s ridiculous,’ adds Lillis. ‘Every team has bent the rules in some shape or form. If they’re not allowed on the field, they’ll be in the basketball hall. Or they’ll go to the gym. Or go running. So many loopholes that team jump through.’
Watching six elite hurling teams train and play in Boston and Sydney recently in the Fenway Park Classic and Wild Geese Trophy despite training ban guidelines only provided further contradiction.
‘That just takes the biscuit. I don’t see the point in going to Fenway and Wild Geese. Who is that really benefiting? We were watching it here on Sunday. Teams training five times before. A bit farcical that they are allowed train for this competition but we’re being penalised ahead of Championship,’ Lillis said.
