SIDELINE KICK: That the ball shall be played in a forward direction from the kick, except where the kick is inside the 20-metre line of the opposing team.

The defensive team knows where the ball is going which means the team with the ball is goosed. The attacking element is undone given it doesn’t look like the offensive mark applies from a set-play. It’s demoralisi­ng to see a team win a sideline, then kick it back to their own ’45. I’ve heard 20,000 odd people go, ‘Ah no’. No issue. Might stop defensive play a little. Trying to kick into a blanket defence, it might force attacking team to kick ball away but worth a look. Will encourage a team to kick quickly before defences set.
