No excuse for the trip to Oz

The Irish Mail on Sunday - - COMMENT -

THAT Oireachtas group’s visit to Australia (MoS, December 2) is a ridiculous waste of money.

I’m not surprised that the politicians seemed to be using social media to disguise the fact that they were on the other side of the globe, as I doubt their constituents will be impressed with their behaviour.

We have a Department of Foreign Affairs with a cabinet minister, two junior ministers and a huge staff. We also have diplomats and embassies all over the globe. On occasion there may be good reason for another minister, or the Taoiseach, to make an international trip.

But there is no excuse for ordinary TDs and senators to be jetting off on such junkets. It is not their job to be diplomats. I hope the MoS’s revelations will cost Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher and the rest of the junketeers votes.
