Chigozie Obioma Little, Brown €21

Obioma’s second novel marries the mythical to the everyday. It tells the story of a poor Nigerian chicken farmer, Chinonso, who saves an educated woman, Ndali, from suicide, and in so doing, changes the course of both their lives. The story of their relationship is told by Chinonso’s ‘chi’, or guardian spirit, who is testifying before the supreme Igbo god because Chinonso has seemingly done something heinous. But what? At once funny, furiously inventive and disturbing, it’s an uncomfortable but engrossing read.
