Douglas Kennedy Hutchinson €15.99

All families are secret societies, none more so than the American Burns clan. Their story is told from the perspective of daughter Alice, who’ll eventually become a book editor in Eighties New York, along the way surviving tragedy in Ireland during the Troubles and discovering that her father and brother were involved in the coup that ousted Chile’s President Allende. She’ll even meet a young Donald Trump. Kennedy’s pacy, emotionally shrewd family drama also depicts huge shifts in US politics, but Alice makes an oddly absent centre as she’s buffeted along by the music of chance.
