Early signs pointed to a mighty upset ...

-

IN the end, it became yet another procession for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s side strode into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

For much of the first half, though, fourth-tier Newport County grew hopeful of another upset. Not only were they just the fifth different team to stop City scoring in the first half of a game this season, but decisions went their way and they even had a huge chance to take the lead.

5MIN:

Newport survive early appeals for a penalty despite Mark O’Brien appearing to pull on John Stones’ shirt at a corner.

14MIN:

Newport fans thought they had taken the lead when Tyreeq Bakinson’s header from six yards looked to be heading for the corner, but Ederson saved.

43MIN:

Another Man City penalty shout goes Newport’s way as O’Brien handles.

51MIN:

Man City take the lead but as Leroy Sane’s strike bursts through Newport goalkeeper Joe Day’s hands, hits him in the face busting his nose (right) and spins sharply into the goal.

75MIN:

Day will think he should have kept this one out too as Phil Foden’s effort from the edge of the box goes under his body and in to make it 2-0.
