League champions Peamount are out for final revenge

- By Lisa Conway

WOMEN’s soccer is buzzing on the back of last summer’s World Cup and, after the record crowd that turned out to watch Ireland secure a thrilling 3-2 win over Ukraine in a Euro qualifier in Tallaght, today represents another landmark occasion for the game.

The meeting of Peamount United and Wexford Youths in the FAI Women’s Cup final is an intriguing contest ahead of the men’s decider at Aviva Stadium. These two sides know each other well and there will be a definite edge to this contest after last year’s decider between the same teams which was decided by a first-half strike from Wexford’s Katrina Parrock that clinched the domestic treble.

Peamount felt they let themselves down 12 months ago and, going into the contest as league champions this time around, there is a determination to set the record straight.

Peamount’s Ireland international Áine O’Gorman has spoken of her side’s frustration with last term’s outcome.

‘We were really disappointed last year. We didn’t adapt to the game as quick as we should,’ said O’Gorman.

‘But It was a great experience for us being here and realising how big the pitch is, so we are hoping to use that to our advantage this year. Hopefully ourselves and Wexford can put on good display.’

Meanwhile, Wexford skipper Kylie Murphy is looking for her team to be inspired again by the big stage to replicate their 2018 glory.

‘To lift the trophy was an unbelievable experience. It was incredible,’ she said.

‘We know a good bit about them, as they do about us. They are an incredible team and will be very hard to beat.

‘They are going to be high on life after winning the league last weekend. It’s going to be a good battle.

‘It’s a huge occasion,’ added Murphy. ‘You are walking out to family, friends and supporters. It gets you every time.’ FAI Women’s Cup final (12.05pm): Wexford Youths v Peamount United, LIVE RTÉ2
