New York Fashion Week put the city that never sleeps right back at the top of its game
New York Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2020 came at us with a burst of neon brights and geometric shapes. Marc
Jacobs made sure to razzle dazzle with more than 50 dancers (and Miley Cyrus) making his perfectly tailored retro ensembles look the epitome of calm in a chaotic world.
At Zimmerman it was frills, lace and ribbons all the way for an ultra feminine celebration while Anna Sui took her inspiration from 1970s horror movies.
Stuart Vevars for Coach returned to 1980s New York for his inspiration with broad shoulders and slouchy socks making for a super relaxed feel. Debbie Harry even put in an appearance and surprised guests with a rendition of Dreaming.
For Bibhu Mohapatra, the inspiration came from a dark place after reading Amrita Pritam’s 1950 novel, Pinjar, ‘a story about the complex lives of women during the partition of India’ resulting in asymmetric hemlines, geometric patterns and pleats galore.
On the street, it was practical footwear from chunky boots to good ole trainers and an array of coats and colours to keep us inspired with mustards and oranges again giving us pause for thought.
This year the Chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, one Tom Ford, condensed the event to five days and in a surprise move, held his own show in LA. In this digital age maybe location is no longer important with live streaming of shows and social media attention the way forward.
Still, the city that never sleeps, knows how to entertain and this New York Fashion Week certainly put itself back on the map.
