THE ART OF AL

Set up the perfect place to eat and relax outdoors with inspiration for space that’s practical and comfortable

- Emily Westbrooks

It remains to be seen whether we’re using up all of our summer weather before summer really gets under way, but if the past few weeks of recurring warm weather have taught us anything, it’s that we should always be ready to take our dinner (or breakfast or lunch) al fresco.

First, you’ll need a table and chairs that are just as enjoyable for sitting outside as your regular indoor dining set up is. It’s possible to eat a meal off a coffee table, but it’s certainly not that comfortable. Whatever table and chairs you choose, make sure they can be left outside and withstand the elements. Bistro lights always improve a space and add ambience, even if dark doesn’t fall until late at night, and if you can secure them well they should hold up throughout the summer months.

Of course, since we’re always at risk of high winds or lashing rain cropping up unexpectedly, make sure you have a way to store the items that could get blown away. If you have a storage bin use that, otherwise storing them in a shed is ideal. Having already broken a few wine glasses on our patio this season, break-proof glasses and plates are a good recommendation so you can enjoy a drink outside as the sun sets. If you have kids, that’s all the more reason to invest in more durable options.

Stock up on a few blankets to take the chill off as the sun goes down, and a handful of cushions to add comfort as you’re sitting.

Incorporating a few decorative bits for the table will make your outdoor dining set-up perfect for the next beautiful day.
