Masterful mantelpieces

Change up your room this season with inspiration for a breezy vibe over the fireplace

- Emily Westbrooks

Afireplace is a must-have for a cosy Irish winter, offering warmth on a chilly day. But as temperatures creep a bit higher, a fireplace mantel can become one of the most versatile interior design elements, offering a space for highlighting summer decor items.

One of my favourite things to do to shake up the feel of our living room is to change out the styling of the mantel with each season. I’ll often search around my own home for this type of decor change in order to keep costs down, and I’m always surprised with what I find hidden in the back of a press.

Here are a few steps for styling a fresh and cheerful summer mantel.

First, clear it all off, give it a wipe down, and if possible, even remove any artwork or mirrors hanging above it so you can view the area with fresh eyes.

Then take a walk around your home and pick up any decor items you could incorporate. Don’t forget potted plants; if they’ll fit securely on your mantel, they can instantly create a verdant vibe that’s perfect for summer.

Since you’re creating a seasonal mantel, don’t worry about nailing anything into the wall.

Leaning artwork is a top trend that’s worth taking advantage of at the moment because it allows for a temporary change. Swapping out candles for a cheery colour can also give your mantel a boost.

If you’re in the market for new decor items, a mantel is a super way to highlight them. Brass ornaments, a new plant pot, or even bookends can give your mantel new life for the summer months.
