Eoghan, the 2fm boomerang who is too hot for Oz
THE curious case of 2fm’s Eoghan McDermott’s morning slot boomerang has left some people scratching their heads as he revealed this week that he had just signed a new contract with the station.
The Irish Daily Mail discovered earlier this year that McDermott let slip to friends that he was packing his bags and heading Down Under with girlfriend Aoife, and would shortly be saying ‘G’Day Mate’ to his RTÉ colleagues.
Eoghan enjoyed huge success last year as the narrator of Love Island Australia – which propelled him to stardom beyond the D4 set. Indeed when the MoS contacted the normally chatty McDermott he diverted the query to the press office who didn’t deny the story.
Since the story of his departure broke, Eoghan, who has his own radio show and a massive social media reach, didn’t nip the reports in the bud – despite a plethora of presenters publicly throwing their mic in the ring to take over his coveted show.
But since then Covid has turned the world upside down and, with it, Eoghan’s Oz dream
– as Love
Island was cancelled and Australia closed its borders, even to celebrities such as himself. So this week Eoghan publicly declared he was still a Montrose man, even insisting the first he knew of the story of his departure was when he read all about it.
He said he did not officially hand in his notice and negotiations never got beyond the chatter stages. But now that this mystery has been cleared up, kind of, we can safely say Australia’s loss is this nation’s gain – as we get to keep the chirpy breakfast show host, left.
