Little did I think that taking my temperature every other day would become a regular habit, however, it’s part of a new a regime. I decided last week that rather than use a traditional manual thermometer, I’d invest in a smart gadget that will record the data on an ongoing basis.

The Thermo from Withings is a small, battery-powered temporal thermometer. It arrives with two AAA batteries inserted and they will power the thermometer for up to two years.

It uses Bluetooth or Wifi connectivity, with the Wifi connection being the better, more reliable option. While it can be used independently, the Withings Health Mate app is excellent. It’s available for iOS and Android and when used, opens up access to really useful additional features.

One of those is the ability to create profiles for a family of up to eight people. This allows you to record the readings for a family over a period of time. Using the Thermo is simple. It doesn’t require to be touched to the skin and it takes a reading simply by waving across the forehead. Almost instantly it records your temperature and displays the reading using an LED. There’s also a useful traffic-light style indicator, with green showing if your temperature is within the recommended range.

After taking your temperature, you can then assign the reading to one of the family profiles that have been created. If the reading indicated you have a higher than recommended temperature, an amber light will be displayed.

Cleverly, the app can then make a record of medication you take. That allows you to look back and see if this was just a blip and a paracetamol did the trick. This is particularly useful if you’re keeping an eye on the health of children or elderly relatives.

A hundred euros does sound like a lot for a thermometer. However, given its ease of use and ability to manage a families profile it’s not only decent value but a valuable tool when the nation needs us all to stay well and safe.
