WHITE WAY TO STAY NEUTRAL

Create calm with simple combinations for a spa-like space

- Emily Westbrooks

It’s no great mystery that I usually err on the side of strong colours or high contrast within my own home and in the inspirational images that catch my eye. But when life feels particularly hectic (ahem, like during a pandemic with two exceedling active toddlers flinging about), I have a soft spot for calming neutrals.

The simple combination of warm white, grey and light wood like birch can bring a spa-like quality to your home. The key, however, is to ensure that those calming neutral tones are still interesting and not dull; when you choose such a limited colour palette that’s a risk you’ll inevitably run.

In order to create a calming neutral space that’s still visually interesting, you’ll want to focus on texture. Start with woven material on your sofa or a high pile rug under foot. You can add in a few throw cushions with different neutral motifs, or try a set of rattan baskets for storage.

The wood tone you choose is also important for creating this look. Birch and light, warm wood tones will give your space a cosy feel when paired with white or varying shades of off-white or cream. Dark wood, on the other hand, will give the space a strong contrast that might be a little too severe for your spa feel.

If you’re looking for more of a weathered, beachy vibe, adding in light grey can make you feel as if you’ve just landed at your holiday home in the Hamptons.

Whitewashed wood adds to this look, and can be a great solution if you have furniture that’s in need of upcycling or even wooden floors that would benefit from a new look.
