Early goals put Limerick in driving seat in Dungarvan

LIMERICK had a far easier than expected win – 2-14 to 0-9 – over Waterford in the Munster SFC in Dungarvan last night.

Victory for the Treaty men sets up a provincial semi-final clash with either Clare or Tipperary who clash in Thurles today.

The men in green were well on their way to victory at the end of the opening quarter when they were 2-4 to 0-1 to the good.

Following last weekend’s victory over Meath, Kerry took a big step towards progressing to the Joe McDonagh Cup decider with a comfortable 23-19 to 0-14 win over Westmeath in Mullingar.

It was a closely contested encounter until the final quarter when a Shane Nolan goal proved crucial in shifting momentum in the Kingdom’s direction.

Pádraig Boyle also pitched in with three points for the visitors who had trailed 0-10 to 1-6 at half-time, a deficit that was hardly disheartening given the wind advantage that had been enjoyed by Westmeath.

Shane Conway scored the only goal of the first half and also went on to register 11 points for Kerry who are next out against Antrim.

The Ulster men had opened their campaign with a 22-point triumph over Westmeath but had to be content with a 5-16 to 2-25 draw against Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park yesterday.

The Saffrons will be grateful to Donal Nugent whose late goal snatched a share of the spoils.

There was little between the sides throughout but the visitors were 210 to 0-15 ahead at the interval with goals from Ciarán Clarke and Conor McCann.

Eddie Byrne’s goal in the final quarter put Carlow in command before Nugent rescued the Ulster side with his late strike.
