Laura Bermingham Fight the frizz

- Laura Bermingham

Of all hair types, curly and unruly lengths a re probably the most demanding when it comes to hair care. Finer hair has its own concerns; lack of volume and in compatibility with any hair product that isn’t lightweight are two common issues. Curly hair, on the other hand, requires a lot of products to keeping it looking healthy and glossy because it’s naturally dry and needs moisture. When hair is dry in this way it seeks out moisture from the atmosphere and this causes frizz.

So how do you correct the situation and give curly hair the much-needed moisture it lacks?

Assuming you already have the correct daily care, shampoo and conditioner for curly hair (or at least, dry or damaged hair), up your routine to include either a twice-weekly masque or hot oil treatment. Masques are great in warmer months. They add moisture to the lengths and are easily rinsed away. Hot oil in the colder months helps hair to retain moisture, boosts strength and makes hair look more glossy. Look to brands like Kérastase, Shu Uemura, Bumble & Bumble and Olaplex for an oil and follow the instructions.

It’s no wonder that those with curly or unruly hair go longest between washes. The hair is already dry and oily roots are masked by thicker hair. But here’s the thing, even if your face was dry you wouldn’t wash it on a Monday and not again until Sunday! It

would be parched of moisture. Hair is not dissimilar. Even if your scalp doesn’t need a wash, your hair lengths would benefit from moisture every day.

All hair types benefit from using heat and pollution protection that usually come in spray form and are used before heat styling. If you plan to wash and dry they are a must for curly hair prone to frizz.

But you can go one step further by keeping a hydrating mist and using it on your hair every day, even if your hair is dry.

These mists a re usually silicone-free and contain naturally hydrating factors like aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, plus lightweight plant oils that will work as a barrier on the hair, preventing moisture loss while they boost hair health.

Not only that, they help detangle the hair and keep it smoother and glossier throughout the day. There is no set rule as to how often you should use a mist — the condition of your hair will dictate that.

For these, look to brands like She a Moisture, Davines, Color Wow and Ouidad. You can find some of these in pharmacies or health stores and also online.
