We WON’T see yiz in Coppers!

Dubs’ Cluxton in Covid-era message

DUBLIN captain Stephen Cluxton urged fans to celebrate responsibly after he guided his team to an unprecedented sixth All-Ireland football final victory.

The Dubs beat Mayo by five points in an empty Croke Park yesterday, and goalkeeper Cluxton used his victory speech to drive home a Covid message.

‘It has been a challenging and tough year for us all and for those who have suffered loss in this pandemic you are all in our thoughts.

‘Hopefully this win will bring a smile to your local supporters watching at home and I ask you all to enjoy the win in a safe and responsible manner,’ he told fans after holding the Sam Maguire aloft.

The captain’s sober words were in stark contrast to the party atmosphere in 2011, when Dublin’s thencaptain Bryan Cullen famously ended his victory speech referring to a well-known night club, saying: ‘See yiz in Coppers.’

Cluxton said: ‘This means a lot to us, the Dublin team, and I’d like to thank the offices of Croke Park for organising the competition very safely in the times we live in.

‘I’d like to congratulate Mayo on a fine game today. You brought it to the wire as always, you made it tough and no doubt you’ll be there or thereabouts next year.

‘To the officers of the county board and the staff of Parnell Park, thank you for your support of the team and your tireless work to promote Gaelic games in Dublin.

‘To Dessie, the management team and the backroom team many thanks for your leadership.

‘To the Dublin players, your dedication, self-sacrifice and commitment to the county has led you to this win today, well done and well deserved.’
