Fulham cling on for a draw

- By Craig Hope

Newcastle 1 Fulham 1

TEN-MAN Fulham picked up a well-earned point with a stubborn display at Newcastle.

Fulham took the lead with three minutes of the half remaining after winning a left-wing corner.

Ademola Lookman swang the ball into the middle, where defender Tosin Adarabioyo headed it down for Decordova-Reid to flick the ball towards goal with Jamie Ritchie only able to help it into his own net.

Newcastle started the second half with purpose and were awared a penalty on 58 minutes after Joachim Andersen gave Wilson a push in the back right in front of referee Graham Scott.

Following a lengthy VAR check, including Scott reaching for a card before returning to the pitch-side monitor — for a second time — to have another look at the incident, Andersen was shown a red card and the Magpies were awarded a penalty. Wilson stepped up and coolly slotted the ball into the net.

Now a man up, Newcastle sensed the three points were there for the taking and Sean Longstaff tested Alphonse Areola from a free-kick on 67 minutes.

But they did not have it all their own way, as Karl Darlow did well to deny Lookman a minute later.

In the final 15 minutes, the hosts pushed for a win with Joelinton and Wilson both creating opportunities but not really testing Areola in the away goal.

In the final minute of injury time, Fulham had a huge penalty appeal after the ball looked to strike Ciaran Clark’s hand but the claims went unheard by the officials.
