Keep track of your health on your watch

Samsung Galaxy Fit2 From €49

★★★★★

I’ve been using a smartwatch for some time, but I know there are lots of people who don’t want the advanced functionality or price-tag attached to Apple or Huawei watches. For the casual runner or walker who just wants to track steps, heart and calories there are plenty of reasonably priced options.

The newest of these lower-cost fitness trackers is the Samsung Galaxy Fit2.

This is a small and slim option from Samsung. It weighs just 21g and measures 46.6mm by 18.6mm.

Despite its slim dimensions, it has an impressive 1.1in screen. The bright full-colour AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) is excellent.

The brightness and clarity took me by surprise and it’s not just easy to read health stats at a glance,

IT OFFERS ANALYSIS OF SLEEP QUALITY AND ‘AWAKE TIME’

reading SMS or WhatsApp messages is also feasible.

I set up mine to display the time, date and steps taken so far today but there are 70 different faces.

You can customise the display to show what’s important to you – perhaps calories or heart rate – but whatever you choose the display is big enough to let you know at a glance how you’re doing.

Featurewise, Samsung has packed a lot in here.

It has heart-rate tracking which is useful to review in the context of your exercise records.

It also tracks sleep and provides good analysis on light, deep and REM sleep as well as recording any ‘awake time’ during the night.

More trackers and watches are adding stress management as a feature and the Fit2 pairs with Samsung Health app to automatically track your stress level and it will guide you through breathing exercises if the day is getting on top of you.

The Fit2 uses the Samsung Health app, but the tracker works with Android phones and iOS, so you don’t need to be a Samsung phone owner to use it.

While swimming pools aren’t open at the moment, the Fit2 will look after you there when they reopen.

Swimming exercise will be recorded and the tracker is water resistant to 50m.

There is also a useful features to set reminders to wash your hands, and a timer will prompt you to keep washing for the recommended time.

The Fit2 ships with its proprietary charger. That’s fine, but I’m getting tired of having a different charger for every gadget I own. I wish Samsung and others would standardise or just go wireless, soon.

Overall, though, this is a great tracker for the money. Perhaps the battery could be better for a small tracker, but I seem to be getting almost two weeks between charges.

Available in a sporty scarlet or daytime black, there’s a lot of good tech in here at a great price for those who want to move more this year.
