CHERRY Gruelling tale of a veteran’s descent into a life of crime

The film opens with a young man sticking up a bank and then flashes back to the events – told in a series of titled chapters – that led up to that point. He impulsively joined the Army after his girlfriend dumped him and served as a medic in Iraq, where his experiences traumatised him and led him to drugs and thence to crime. Directed by the Russo brothers, best known for their Marvel films, and starring Spider-Man actor Tom Holland (right, with Ciara Bravo), who gives a great performance as the title character, this is a visually stylish but gruelling and overlong drama.
