Potential petrolhead

Aldi Clare Valley Riesling 2019

€9.99, Aldi

All citrus zing and green apples now, bone dry, but will do the four-star unleaded act in a couple of years.

Rhône ranger Puech-Morny Gigondas

2019

Claret from chile

Los Vascos Grande Reserve 2017

€16.95, O’Brien’s This is Chilean claret, in a sense, although Cabernet is joined by Carmanère and Syrah. Lovely now but will go on nicely...

MMM... Merlot

Tesco Finest St Emillion Grand Cru 2016

€20, Tesco

Proper left-bank claret with oodles of Merlot, great with roast beef now but its true fragrance will emerge given a bit longer.

Ten year sentence

A bargain worth snapping up and lovely now at this great price but it has huge ageing potential.
