Niamh sets sights on a BAFTA with Horses role

RISING star Niamh Algar has been making huge strides in her career recently, culminatin­g in a nomination for her first BAFTA.

But Niamh, 31, will be watching tonight’s awards ceremony from afar as she is on location in South Africa, filming the hit sci-fi series Raised By Wolves with acclaimed director Ridley Scott.

recent years, and in 2019 she was named as one of BAFTA’s rising stars.

Now, just two years later, the Mullingar native is a major contender for the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role in Irish crime drama Calm With Horses.

Niamh is best-known for her breakout role in the Channel 4 miniseries The Virtues, in which she played the character Dinah. She has also starred alongside Dublin’s Barry Keoghan – who is also up for a BAFTA – in Calm With Horses, and appeared as Tania in Channel 4’s The Bisexual.

Animated film Wolfwalker­s is another homegrown contender.

But it was being cast in Ridley Scott’s series that catapulted Niamh’s career to another level. She is on location in Cape Town filming the second series of the hit show and yesterday shared a snap of an early-morning boxing session.

Niamh revealed she sent Scott, who is also partial to a spot of sparring in the ring, a video of herself being put through her pugilistic paces. The acclaimed director was so impressed by the multi-talented actress that he immediatel­y cast her in his series. So with Ridley Scott in her corner and her first award up for grabs, Niamh is sure to be a knockout in the acting world.
