HERO OF 2009 IN THE MIX AGAIN

-

WARREN GATLAND may feel Johnny Sexton is not durable enough for a summer series against the Springboks, but the hosts could unleash a 36-yearold out-half as their secret weapon against the Lions.

Morne Steyn was one of the heroes of the 2-1 series win against the Lions back in

2009, with the Bulls star stepping up to nail a long-range, matchwinning penalty in the second Test in Pretoria.

Handre Pollard remains the main man for South Africa at No10, but Steyn – who scored 766 points in 66 Test matches for his country, could come back to haunt the tourists again this summer.

‘There’s strong rumours that he will be involved in the squad but nothing confirmed yet. But he’s definitely on the Bok radar,’ says Hendrik Cronje, rugby writer with Rapport in South Africa.

‘I think he’s more of an insurance policy if something happens to Pollard. If something happened to him, I think Morne Steyn (left) is definitely part of it. There’s Elton Jantjes as well. He’s definitely a back-up option.’
