Three Families 9PM, BBC1 ★★★★

It’s one thing knowing a law exists, but quite another seeing the impact up close. Abortion was illegal in Northern Ireland until 2019, and this rounded and hugely effective two-part drama – based on true stories – explores the choices that the threat of both criminal and moral judgment brought on families. We meet Theresa (Sinéad Keenan), who has a baby of her own and an evasive daughter, Orla, and a couple hoping to be pregnant. You’ll want a tissue before the end of part one, and the second half follows tomorrow. Genevieve O’Reilly (right) co-stars.

Inside No 9 9.30PM, BBC2

★★★

Those who enjoy self-aware TV should get a kick out of this first of a new series of the dark comedy; here, the actors, led by a winking Gemma Whelan, constantly comment on the script, plot, and even address the camera.
