Interiors:

Monochrome style

- Emily Westbrooks

While the height of summer might not feel like the natural time to talk about colourless interiors, it might actually be the perfect time for just that. Monochrome interiors, sleek and smooth with only black, white and a few shades in between, are the perfect respite any time of year.

Many of us tend to gravitate toward a modicum of colour, but keeping a space completely devoid of it can be unexpectedly soothing and reminiscent of continental hotels we’re all still itching to return to.

It’s fairly simple to create this look at home. Just stick to a very singular colour palette of white, black and the middling greys in between.

But there are two elements to keep in mind. First, keep white on the warm side or slightly off-white in order to ensure the space isn’t too clinical. Second, make sure there’s texture in textiles and patterns sprinkled throughout the space. This will add warmth to a colourfree interior.

Geometric patterns work especially well, as do industrial elements like matte black metal accessories or furniture. But what really makes the space feel luxurious and soothing is the inclusion of natural elements, such as woven baskets and warm wood. If your flooring is already a lighter wooden tone, you’re in business and can layer on black, white and grey without danger of the space feeling like an office.

If you’re working with other existing flooring, invest in a few woven baskets or pop some dried pampas grasses into a vase for a soft statement that will tone down the hard edges of the otherwise monochrome space.
