Garda plea for witnesses after GAA skipper, 19, is killed in two-car collision

TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to a talented young GAA player who was killed in a two-car collision.

Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh, who captained the Monaghan under20s in the Ulster FC semi-final clash against Donegal, died after the collision near Tullybuck, Clontibret, at around 11.30pm on Friday.

The 19-year-old, who was driving one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His club, Monaghan Harps, issued a statement on social media saying it is ‘devastated at the news of the untimely death of our senior player and county U-20 captain Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh’.

The club added: ‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time. All club activity has been postponed until further notice.’

The N2 at Tullybuck was closed off yesterday and diversions put in place as a Garda forensics team examined the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the fatal collision.

A Garda spokesman said: ‘Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward.

‘Gardaí are also appealing to anyone who was in the Tullybuck, Clontibret area yesterday evening between 11.15pm and midnight to contact them.

‘Any road users who were travelling in the area and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make it available to investigat­ing gardaí.’
