- By Nicola Byrne

A MAN has died from injuries he

sustained while trying to stop his car being stolen last weekend.

The incident happened on the Robinhood Road in Clondalkin, Dublin, at around 6.15pm last Sunday.

Ian McDonnell, 50, a married father of three who lived in Lucan, had jumped onto his car as he attempted to stop it being taken from outside his business premises.

He was carried on the bonnet of the car for a distance, before he was later found lying on the road with ‘serious life-threatening injuries’.

Mr McDonnell was taken by ambulance to Tallaght University Hospital, where he died on Friday evening.

The grey Volkswagen Passat was located on Limekiln Grove, Greenhills, on Friday, and has been forensically examined.

A second car involved in the incident – a silver Toyota Aqua, registration number 152 D 32687 – which was stolen in Crumlin last Sunday afternoon, was found burned out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght, on Tuesday.

It has also been forensically examined.

Mr McDonnell was originally from the west of Ireland and was the manager of Ozone cars in Clondalkin.

In Lucan yesterday, tributes were paid to him.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Ed O’Brien said the ‘overwhelming sense is of shock’ in the area, following the death of Mr McDonnell.

He added: ‘Lucan, despite its growth, is a small tight-knit community and all our thoughts and prayers are with Ian’s family at the moment.’
