Those skimpy frocks? I wear them because my 50s are my second spring, says Davina

AS A woman in her 50s, TV presenter Davina McCall has faced criticism over her daring sartorial style.

But the TV presenter says that being in the ‘second spring’ of life since reaching the landmark half-century drives her on to dress flamboyantly.

Ms McCall came under fire last year after appearing on screen in a number of bold designs, including a red, skin-tight latex creation.

Now the mother of three, who was formerly the host of the Channel 4 reality series Big Brother, has hit back at her critics, saying, ‘Ten years ago, I would have been nervous about putting myself out there for fear of being judged, and now I really don’t care. I just want to live my life’.

She continued: ‘As you get older, you meet more and more men and women in their 50s who are in, as I call it, the second spring. We are having this kind of second spring and now I don’t really care — it’s very liberating. With every year that passes and every experience you have, you just begin to care less and less.’

Now 54, Ms McCall is the latest female TV star to be accused of wearing risqué outfits while presenting. Holly Willoughby, 40, last year attracted 300 Ofcom comments when she wore a lowcut peach dress hosting Dancing On Ice.

And in September 2020, Amanda Holden, who turned 50 last February, prompted 235 complaints when she wore a plunging black dress on Britain’s Got Talent.

Ms McCall — who split from her husband of 17 years, Matthew Robertson, in 2017 — and is now dating hairdresser Michael Douglas, is candid about her gruelling exercise regime, which she credits for her enviable six-pack. As well as running, boxing and yoga, she takes part in deep-water running — jogging in water that is too deep to stand in.
