ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Kildare v Kerry

St Conleth’s Park, 1.45pm

The return of Jack O’Connor to Kildare after his premature exit has afforded this game a level of intrigue it might not otherwise have had. Paul Galvin’s presence on the home sideline adds another delicious sub-plot and that might generate enough heat to make this a testing afternoon for the visitors, but one in which their superior quality will prevail. Verdict: Kerry

Mayo v Donegal Markievicz Park, 1.45pm

James Horan has named a strong team, but recent history suggests that they are also a group who take time to find their stride. Meanwhile, when Declan Bonner unloaded his bench last weekend, particularly when introducing Michael Murphy (right), Donegal reminded that they have the quality to match anyone. Verdict: Donegal

Tyrone v Monaghan Healy Park, 3.45pm

It is the privilege of All-Ireland champions to take some time to find their feet, but if Tyrone are not ready for this they could be involved in a game of catch-up before they realise it. And one of the key factors as to why Monaghan have constantly defied the odds by staying in the top division for eight straight seasons is their ability to hit the ground running.

Verdict: Monaghan

DIVISION 2

Clare v Offaly

Cusack Park, Ennis, 2pm

This may be the opening round but it is better viewed as a relegation four-pointer, and Clare have the experience when it comes to shovelling their way back into the light. Verdict: Clare

Galway v Meath Pearse Stadium, 2pm

When it comes to make-orbreak results, neither can be trusted but the impetus Cian O’Neill’s appointment in Galway can create, their edge in quality and home advantage

points to an uncomfortable trip home for Andy McEntee’s team. Verdict: Galway

Roscommon v Cork Dr Hyde Park, 2pm

There is huge potential in Cork and the Rebels will not be disrupted by St Finbarr’s involvement in the club championship to the same degree that Anthony Cunningham will be discommoded by the absence of his Padraig Pearses contingent. Verdict: Cork

DIVISION 3 Louth v Laois Ardee, 2pm

Based on pre-season form, Billy Sheehan is set for a rare experience as a Kerry rookie by beating Mickey Harte at the first go. Verdict: Laois

Westmeath v Wicklow Cusack Park, 2pm

One of the easier calls this weekend as Westmeath make an early declaration of intent in pursuit of promotion against visitors already hovering over the relegation trapdoor.

Verdict: Westmeath

DIVISION 4

Leitrim v Cavan

Páirc Sean MacDiarmada, 2pm

Mickey Graham could hardly have hand-picked an easier way to kick-start his promotion stroll. Verdict: Cavan

Waterford v Tipperary Fraher Field, 2pm

Ephie Fitzgerald’s Waterford team can make life uncomfortable for the visitors, but no more than that. Verdict: Tipperary

Wexford v Sligo Wexford Park, 2pm

Under Shane Roche, Wexford appear to be onthe rise again and should have too much for Sligo.

Verdict: Wexford
