TUESDAY The Blue Dahlia (1946) PG
● 12.45PM, FILM4 ★★★★ Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake (above) made seven films together, and are bestknown for their noirs. Written by Raymond Chandler, this classic finds Ladd’s war veteran the prime suspect in the murder of his adulterous wife, with Lake as the woman who picks him up.
Wedding Planner Mystery (2014) PG
● 2.15PM, CH5 ★★ In between organising wedding celebrations for discerning (i.e., stinking rich) clients, unflappable Carnegie Kincaid (Erica Durance) sets about solving the murder of a bridesmaid — and clearing her own name when she’s suspected of the crime.
What Lies Beneath (2000) 15
◆ 9PM, 5STAR ★★★ Psychological thriller starring Michelle Pfeiffer (left) as the wife, recovering at home from an accident, who is plagued by ghosts and suspicion. Is her husband (Harrison Ford) keeping secrets? Or is she being haunted by a murdered woman?

The Cassandra Crossing (1976) PG
● 2.40PM, FILM4 ★★★★ Disaster movies of the 1970s don’t get much more enjoyably ludicrous than this tale about a train contaminated with a deadly virus. A carriage load of big names from decades past — including Sophia Loren, Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner — play the passengers.
The Chronicles Of Riddick (2004) 15
◆ 9PM, ITV4 ★★★ Mystifying follow-up to the rather decent Pitch Black – also directed by David Twohy, and headlined by Vin Diesel (above), the gruff star who isn’t a strong enough presence to carry the film, even with Judi Dench in support.
Panic Room (2002) 15
◆ 10.45PM, GREAT! MOVIES ★★★★ A slick ‘women in peril’ thriller from reliable David Fincher (of Se7en fame). Jodie Foster and a very young Kristen Stewart are the mother and daughter under attack and taking refuge in their home’s fortress-like panic room – thinking they’ll be safe there.

◆ 11.05PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ Renee Zellweger won an Oscar for playing Judy Garland in this drama that follows the star’s 1969 residency at a London nightclub. Jessie Buckley also stars (above right, with Zellweger) as Garland’s assistant, with Gemma-Leah Devereux as daughter Liza. See pages 4 & 5

● 1.10PM, FILM4 ★★★★ Virginia McKenna (above) and Bill Travers star as Joy and George Adamson in this dramatisation of the couple’s lives in Kenya, where they raise orphaned lion cubs. George is the wildlife warden who kills the cubs’ parents, and brings the three of them home.

● 4.50PM, GREAT! MOVIES ★★★★ Older and beardier, Robin Hood returns to England after 20 years abroad, and seeks out his old love, Marian. Audrey Hepburn and Sean Connery star in Richard Lester’s expertly crafted drama that celebrates a later flush of love and heroism.

◆ 9PM, BBC4 ★★★★★ The film that made Woody Allen was a critical and commercial hit that marked the start of a productive period of selfreflective film-making that audiences loved. Diane Keaton is Annie, the kooky singer whose failed romance with Allen’s neurotic comic is picked apart.

▲ 10.30PM, BBC4 ★★★★★ One of the most celebrated films of the 1970s, director Michael Cimino’s masterpiece pivots around its three central characters’ experiences before, during and after military service in the Vietnam War. ● 1AM, VIRGIN MEDIA ONE ★★★★ Alfred Hitchcock’s excellent British thriller is inspired by Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent. It stars Sylvia Sidney as a bomber’s wife, with John Loder as the dogged detective.

◆ 9PM, E4 ★★★★ Superhero shenanigans for grown-ups – rude, sweary and not skimping on the violence, either. Ryan Reynolds plays the wisecracking mercenary (below) who goes super after trying an experimental cure for cancer.

▲ 10PM, TG4 ★★★★ Glenn Ford plays the former gunslinger and outlaw who moves to a small western town to lead a peaceful life after becoming a preacher. However, he soon gets involved in a feud over the use of water.

◆ 10PM, RTé2 ★★★★ Katherine Heigl stars as a woman who is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Her story attracts the attention of journalist James Marsden and there’s no prizes for guessing what happens next.

▲ ★★★ 11.35PM, 5STAR Nicolas Cage stars as an undead petrolhead in this supernatural action thriller, not to be confused with his Ghost Rider, although it is eerily similar. Cage’s John Milton breaks out of Hell to avenge the murder of his daughter.

◆ 12.35AM, CH4 ★★★ Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott are the hopeless pals who, after a night of heavy drinking, can’t remember where they left their car. Cue madcap antics and silly scrapes.
SATURDAY Paddington (2014) PG
● 6.35PM, RTÉ ONE ★★★★ Ben Whishaw is perfectly cast as the voice of the talking bear who arrives in London looking for a new home in this charming big-screen version of Michael Bond’s stories. The sequel is even better.
