Lemon and sugar topping pancake poll

- By Stian Alexander

LEMON and sugar has come out tops on a pancake poll taken ahead of Pancake Tuesday this week.

The poll of 2,000 people found that a simple squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkle of sugar was still the favourite for the big day – when it’s perfectly acceptable to have pancakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Covering a crepe with chocolate spread was a close second, with maple syrup in the third spot.

The poll by OGGS, a plant-based egg and bakery company, also highlighted the environmental impact of using eggs on the day – in Britain, for example, some 56 million eggs will be used, which generates more than 14,000 tonnes of CO2. ‘That’s the same as driving 1,124 cars around the entire world, travelling a total of 23,000 miles,’ a spokesman for OGGS said. Meanwhile the company’s founder, Hannah Carter, said: ‘We want people to realise how making little switches can make a difference to the planet and to chickens. Most importantly, using alternatives needn’t compromise on taste and flavour.’ And whether you decide to make your pancakes plant-based – using a ‘chia egg’ – or the more traditional way, here’s some other ideas. Some 28% said they liked strawberries on their pancakes, 23% liked banana and the least favoured topping was mixed berries, at 10%.
