RAILWAY UNION were crowned

Energia Women’s All-Ireland League champions last night after a thrilling 24-18 final victory over Blackrock.

Ailsa Hughes grabbed two tries with Molly Scuffil-McCabe scoring the winners’ third on a night when centre Eve Higgins excelled with a player-of-the-match display.

Blackrock, who went in at the break 14-8 down, pushed Railway Union all the way, their tries coming from Hannah O’Connor and Emma Hooban with Meabh Deely kicking a conversion and two penalties.

Blackrock pushed hard for a winning score at the death but Railway held on for their second title, riotously celebrated by their supporters.

Elsewhere, Connacht moved into sixth place in the United Rugby Championship following a hardfought 19-17 victory over the Stormers at a breezy Sportsground in Galway yesterday afternoon.

The Irish side were 10 points behind with 20 minutes remaining but ill-discipline by their South African opponents proved costly with Connacht scoring twice when the Stormers were down a man on each occasion. Paul Boyle, Tom Daly and Peter Sullivan scored tries in an excellent comeback win.
