Hurler Sheff lin grieving over brother

- By Colm McGuirk

THE GAA’s most decorated hurler Henry Shefflin is in mourning this weekend after the sudden death of his brother Paul.

Paul Shefflin, 40, died suddenly while out running on Friday.

The married father-of-four’s death has sent shockwaves through his native Ballyhale Shamrocks GAA club in the tightly-knit community in south Kilkenny.

In a statement issued on social media, his former club said: ‘Shamrocks GAA Club are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of club member and former player Paul Shefflin. Paul was an unbelievable player and won many county championships and club All-Irelands wearing the jersey he loved.’

Just three weeks ago the club lost out to a last-minute goal to near neighbours Ballygunnar in the All-Ireland Club Hurling Final at Croke Park. As a mark of respect, the Ballyhale Shamrocks AGM, which was to take place last night, was adjourned. Mr Shefflin’s wife and four children are being comforted by their family and neighbours.

Paul Shefflin worked as an accountant with Clonmel Healthcare. No arrangements have been made yet for his funeral and will not be done until a post-mortem has taken place.

Ten-time Kilkenny All-Ireland Senior hurling medallist Henry Shefflin now manages Galway, who took on Cork in the National Hurling League in Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night.

Ballyhale parish priest Fr Seán O’Connor said: ‘Paul is the youngest of the Shefflin family, it’s just tragedy for the whole parish. They are totally [in shock].’
