Roche delivers as Peamount keep up momentum

- By Cian O’Connell

IN wild weather conditions at Eamonn Deacy Park Peamount United delivered an accomplished display to defeat Galway WFC 4-0. James O’Callaghan’s team dominated throughout, outclassing a spirited Galway side who just couldn’t deal with the visitors’ physicality and poise. Ruthless Peamount punished Galway’s defensive lapses to accumulate a healthy 3-0 interval advantage.

Peamount’s set-pieces were causing Galway difficulty early on as Chloe Moloney headed home a 12thminute corner from Tiegan Ruddy.

With Karen Duggan, Dora Gorman and Sadhbh Doyle influential in the centre of the park, Peamount controlled the contest.

Three minutes before the break, Peamount added a third goal when Stephanie Roche’s corner-kick ended up crossing the line.

Under duress, Galway did show

After scoring from a corner, she decorated the win with a late score

some good battling qualities in the second half, with Taylor Rutland impressing.

Striker Lynsey McKey smashed an effort off the crossbar, and she also fired narrowly wide as Galway tried to trim the deficit.

Despite the home side’s enthusiasm, Peamount remained in the ascendancy, with Roche decorating the victory with a delightful goal in the 86th minute.

It has been a hugely encouraging start to the campaign for Peamount, who have earned six points, scoring 10 goals and registering two clean sheets in the process.

Next weekend Peamount entertain Treaty United, managed by Don O’Riordan, who was an interested spectator at this match.

Elsewhere, DLR earned a fine victory as Graham Kelly’s outfit defeated Sligo Rovers 3-0 at the Showgrounds.

In front of an official attendance of 945, DLR Waves eventually shrugged off Sligo’s spirited resistance to claim a second win in a row.

At the interval, the visitors’ led courtesy of a fourth-minute Avril Brierley goal, but Sligo battled admirably.

After the restart, though, DLR were crafty enough to add a second goal in the 69th minute as substitute Rachel Doyle netted.

A second Doyle effort in the 75th minute was the insurance goal as DLR Waves left the north west armed with the full complement of spoils.

DLR Waves, who continue to show signs of improvement, face Galway WFC next Saturday in what should be a revealing fixture for both clubs. At Dalymount Park, Bohemians and Athlone Town divided the spoils following a 1-1 draw at the Phibsboro venue.

Erica Burke steered Bohs into a first-half lead in the 22nd minute, but Tommy Hewitt’s Athlone summoned a brave response.

The talented Roisin Molloy restored parity in the third quarter as Athlone earned a point from the trip to the capital.

Two matches were called off as Wexford Youths’ eagerly-anticipated tussle with Shelbourne was postponed, while the Markets Field pitch was deemed unplayable for Treaty United’s meeting against Cork City. Some important games are on the agenda next weekend, with Bohemians welcoming Wexford Youths to Dalymount, while Cork City and Sligo will both be anxious to put points on the board at Turners Cross.

Athlone have shown real grit and determination in their first two fixtures against Wexford and Bohemians, so title holders Shels know a tricky assignment awaits in the Midlands.

Ultimately, though, yesterday’s action confirmed that Peamount and DLR Waves have the ability to make a real impact on the league championship over the coming weeks and months.
